Actor UK

Becoming an actor in the UK is an exciting career to set your sights on. The country has a rich theatre scene, a thriving film and TV industry and so many opportunities for performers. However, actually breaking into the scene can be a little tricky.

Whether you’re dreaming of life on the West End, or in the latest BBC drama, this guide will walk you through how to be an actor in the UK.

Developing Your Craft

Acting is a skill that requires continual development. To stand out in the industry you need to show technical ability, emotional depth and incredible versatility. You also need to keep challenging yourself to develop further, so you can make sure you’re always at the top of your game.

  • Professional training: Whilst professional training isn’t essential, it can help give you the skills you need to compete. Renowned schools, like ourselves, offer you comprehensive training in acting technique, voice, movement and performance. Attending a professional acting school is also an incredible networking opportunity.
  • Practice: Another important prerequisite is practice. Make the most of every chance you get to practice, whether that’s in theatre clubs, workshops, or even at home in front of a camera.

Building a Portfolio

Your portfolio is your CV (although it includes a CV, too). Your portfolio is a chance to show off your look, your talent and your experience.

You should invest in high-quality headshots that represent your personality. You should write a clear and concise CV that lists your experience. And, you should include a short showreel to show off some of your best performances.

If you want to know more about building the perfect portfolio, read our step-by-step guide here.

Understanding the Industry

The UK industry is incredibly diverse, and understanding this will help you find your niche. It can help to decide early on which avenue you want to explore.

Maybe your singing and dancing skills lend themselves to the stage or perhaps you would prefer to be in something gritty and hard-hitting. Whatever the case, look for roles that align with your strengths.

You should also look for tools and platforms to help you.

  • Spotlight is a leading casting directory in the UK, and one of the biggest. Becoming a member will enable you to apply for roles within the platform, helping you get spotted by agents and casting directors.
  • Equity is the UK’s biggest professional performers union. It’s great for support, networking opportunities and legal protection.

Getting Representation

A good agent is worth their weight in gold. They can help you find work and manage your career, taking care of paperwork and legwork so you can focus on your performance.

Look for agents who specialise in your area of interest (theatre, film, etc.) and who have a strong reputation in the industry.

The PMA (Personal Management Association) is a membership organisation for talent agencies. Members are bound by a Code of Good Agent Practice, with outlines regard for the professional welfare of clients; commitment to upholding industry-wide standards, and advocacy for equality, diversity and inclusion, and anti-harassment. https://thepma.com/

Being Persistent

The last thing to remember is that rejection is a natural part of becoming an actor in the UK. You might not land your first audition, or even your 20th, but stay positive and persistent and eventually you’ll land the role you want.

  • “I have just graduated from Liverpool Theatre School with a Level 6 Diploma in Professional Musical Theatre. I wanted to do the BA Hons (Top Up) in Professional Arts Practice course to further develop my skills for the industry. It is the perfect balance between academic writing and creativity. I already have seen improvements, both in my academic and performing work, and I now really value the ability to critically reflect on past experiences in order to improve my current skills.”

  • “I have found that my first term at Italia Conti has been better than I could’ve imagined. I am working with driven, passionate, likeminded people within all different realms of the performing arts industry. I find that the course is very tailored to each individual and the content is broad enough to apply to everyone but specific enough to challenge each person within their abilities. I find the course to be a place where I can collaborate and interact with people who I’d never had met otherwise. I only look forward to what the next few months of the course bring and feel more motivated than ever.”

I really enjoy how flexible the course is, with regards to being able to tailor my studies to my own practice, enabling me to maximise the benefits of this on my future career. I expect my professional development to be impacted exponentially and I am excited to continue!”
