A Comprehensive Overview for Students
Navigating Royal Academy of Dance Grades

The Royal Academy of Dance exams are a structured way for students to demonstrate their abilities. They’re also an internationally recognised qualification. Whether you’re just starting out or working towards high-level exams, understanding the Royal Academy of Dance grades can help you set clear goals for your development.

In this article, we’ll talk through the exams, the grades and why they are so important.

What is the RAD?

The RAD is one of the world’s most respected ballet organisations. The RAD started in 1920 as the Association of Teachers of Operatic Dancing in Great Britain. It came from a meeting of dance professionals, holding its first exams in 1921.

It’s been more than 100 years since the academy was set up, and it’s still one of the world’s most influential dance education and training organisations in the world.

What Are the RAD Exams?

The RAD exams are a widely-recognised foundation for a professional dance career. The RAD syllabus is divided into Graded and Vocational Graded Examinations, which cater to different levels of experience.

The RAD Graded Exams

The RAD-graded exams focus on developing fundamental ballet techniques, artistry and musicality. They’re ideal for students who want a well-rounded dance education but who are not necessarily aspiring to a career in the industry.

  • Pre-primary and primary are a fun introduction to movement, coordination and rhythm.
  • Grades 1-3 focus more on posture, balance and basic ballet techniques.
  • Grades 4-5 are more advanced, putting greater importance on technique and performance.
  • Grades 6-8 look at advanced musicality, performance and skill.

Students can earn UCAS points from grade 6 and above, which can help when applying for university courses such as our BA Hons Dance Course.

The RAD Vocational Exams

If students are considering a professional career in dance/ballet, they will move on to the vocational exams. These require more intensive training and technical ability, ideal for those who want to pursue the performing arts.

The Royal Academy of Dance Ballet Grades:

  • Intermediate foundation and intermediate: These grades develop strength, coordination and control, in preparation for professional training.
  • Advanced foundation, advanced 1 and advanced 2: These levels are designed for aspiring professionals who need to focus on high-level technique, stamina and performance ability.

How to Progress Through the Grades

Moving through the RAD grades requires continual development and improvement, they are not based on age alone. Some students may remain at one level for an extended period of time, whilst others may advance more quickly.

To succeed in the RAD grades, students must:

  • Commit to regular training with qualified teachers
  • Develop musicality and artistry, as well as technique
  • Stay disciplined with regular practice as well as strength training and conditioning
  • Focus on performance experience to improve confidence and stage presence

The Importance of RAD Training

Whether you’re serious about pursuing a dance career, or ballet is just a hobby for you, exams are brilliant for both professional and personal development. RAD exams provide valuable life skills beyond just ballet training, they can help students develop discipline, focus and perseverance. These are skills that will be beneficial in any career path.

  • “I have just graduated from Liverpool Theatre School with a Level 6 Diploma in Professional Musical Theatre. I wanted to do the BA Hons (Top Up) in Professional Arts Practice course to further develop my skills for the industry. It is the perfect balance between academic writing and creativity. I already have seen improvements, both in my academic and performing work, and I now really value the ability to critically reflect on past experiences in order to improve my current skills.”

  • “I have found that my first term at Italia Conti has been better than I could’ve imagined. I am working with driven, passionate, likeminded people within all different realms of the performing arts industry. I find that the course is very tailored to each individual and the content is broad enough to apply to everyone but specific enough to challenge each person within their abilities. I find the course to be a place where I can collaborate and interact with people who I’d never had met otherwise. I only look forward to what the next few months of the course bring and feel more motivated than ever.”
