Acting for the camera is a specific skill that takes some practice.
Whilst stage actors focus on big movements to ensure even those at the back of the theatre are in on the performance, screen actors have a more intimate relationship with the lens. Film/TV actors need to convey emotion subtly, with micro-movements of the eyes and face. Learning how to act for the camera is essential.
At Italia Conti, we offer a range of acting courses that will help prepare students to perform for the camera.

Acting for camera courses will focus on performing for film, television and other screen media. Unlike in theatre, where actors must project, exaggerate and emphasise every movement, screen acting involves stronger inner-life and even more precision and nuance.
The camera will capture every subtle eye movement, change in body language, and facial expression, so when acting for the camera, you need to be hyper-aware of your body. Whether for close-ups or wide shots, in a camera acting course, you’ll learn how to use your face, eyes, body, and stillness to convey emotions effectively.
In theatre, actors are usually required to project their voices and lines, to ensure they are heard by large audiences in big theatres. On-screen, though, directors will rely on a selection of microphones to ensure audio is picked up. This means screen actors will focus more on conversational tones and ‘appropriate’ use of voice.
Theatre performances rely on big, bold movements to convey characters and impact. Camera work, on the other hand, involves a more restrained approach. Even small movements or gestures will have a big impact, so screen actors must focus on finding an ‘appropriate’ use of physicality to match the frame and moment, to ensure performances do not feel forced or fake.
Whilst both screen and stage actors will need to hit marks, performing for the screen involves more understanding of lighting, camera angles and production kit. Knowing how these elements affect a performance is essential.
As TV and film streaming platforms continue to boom, there’s always demand for screen actors. Learning to perform for the camera is essential for aspiring actors who want a successful career in the creative industry. Audiences want authentic performances and directors are looking for actors who can give them this.
At Italia Conti, we prioritise hands-on learning. You’ll work on camera in a professional setting, giving you a chance to familiarise yourself with the kit and review your performance by watching it back.
In our acting courses, you’ll be led by experienced professionals in a nurturing and supportive environment. You’ll learn to work across screen, audio and stage too, developing an intricate understanding of the differences between each medium. Our courses create well-rounded, versatile performers who are prepared to work responsively, in all settings.
